Uh-Oh...How Do I Explain This One Away...
This one is a little more difficult to explain...slashing tires, bodily fluids in the food, promotions for sex, messing with somebody's SCBA? By the way, how does Jolanda Jones ("Jo-Jo") always find a way to 'Sheila-Jackson-Lee' her way into every camera shot pertaining to black or female issues? Is anyone else getting tired of this racist political opportunist?
It may be difficult to explain, but here it goes...
I don't condone people physically harming someone else or their property against their will, in fact, I'm vehemently opposed to it, and I believe in criminally prosecuting offenders to the fullest extent. However, first you have to prove it happened, and you have to prove a fireman did it. So, if you find yourself wondering if a fireman put urine (or other bodily fluids) in your food, or they slashed your tires, then you call the police for vandalism or assault, and you let the police investigate the complaint and prosecute any offenders.
This is also true for graffiti on personal belongings or graffiti on FD property. Graffiti on someone else's property is wrong, no matter what the reason is, and the perpetrator should be criminally prosecuted.
What's a Captain going to do when a female firefighter comes and complains that somebody at the station vandalized her car or put bodily fluids in her food? If I were a Captain, I would tell her that I would make a note of it, and now let's call the police to have them investigate. If it turns out that the police find out a fireman did those things, then that fireman should be criminally prosecuted and fired. To me, it isn't an issue of whether or not the crime was sexist or racist; it's an issue of whether or not it can be proven that some other fireman did it, for whatever reason. Who cares WHY someone committed a criminal act? The issue is whether or not the act WAS committed and WHO committed the act; and the way to find out is through a police investigation, not through a complaint with a station captain.
Good Ol' Boy Network
Rose Arenas claims they didn't help her because the FD is a "good ol' boy network." The FD officers didn't refuse to help her because it's "a good ol' boy network;" they didn't help her because, until she proves that someone actually did what she's saying they did, through a criminal investigation, then what the hell is a fire station captain supposed to do? There is nothing a station captain can do to help you, without indisputable evidence that your allegations are true.
Now, several years after the fact, how is anyone going to prove that these offenses actually occurred, and how is anyone going to prove that a fireman committed these offenses? Then, as if it matters, how is anyone going to prove that the motivation behind these offenses was sexist or racist?
Mentioning these offenses now, several years after the fact, only does exactly what you intended it do...it makes the general public believe there's a rampant problem with sexism in the FD, even though there's no way to prove these things actually occurred or that a fireman committed these acts.
I recently heard (from a primary source) that Rose Arenas keyed a fireman's red jeep, because she was mad that he pushed her into a burning warehouse, when she didn't want to go in with her crew. Again, this may or may not be true, but if it is true, it makes her quite the hypocrite, and it explains why some firemen may not have liked her, which had nothing to do with her gender. It had to do with her being a lazy piece of crap and being a bad firefighter.
Why Do Firemen Harass Eachother?
I don't believe anyone is harassed in the fire department, just because they are a female, or just because they are black. I believe EVERYONE is harassed in the FD for whatever reason a fireman can come up with, because firemen love to harass eachother. It's just that when you're black, or you're a woman, you can cry "racism" or "sexism," and you're protected from being harassed. People harass me because I look like a clown, but looking like a clown is not a legally protected physical characteristic, so I can't just cry "clownism" and make everyone stop (I wish I could use the clownism card).
Firemen harass other firemen because it's fun, it's a tool to establish social hierarchy, and it's a way for people to figure out if they can trust eachother. When firemen prove that they're committed to doing their job & pulling their own weight, in spite of any harassment; they prove that they can take a joke & and they prove they can associate with other firemen without being personally offended all the time; then other firemen are more than willing to accept them into their gaggle with trust and respect, regardless of their race or gender. Nobody cares what race or gender you are, just as long as you do your job, pull your weight, and get along with other people.
What I'm saying is, assuming firemen did put bodily fluids in her food, they slashed her tires, or they tampered with her SCBA; they didn't do it because she was a female. They did it for any one of a number of other reasons. Maybe she was a bitch, maybe she didn't pull her weight, maybe she didn't know how to do her job, or maybe she went around threatening to file sexism lawsuits on everyone for common, everyday teasing incidents. Whatever the reason was, I can almost guarantee the reason was not because she is a woman. I'm not saying I condone firemen's criminal acts; I'm just saying the reason they did it was not because of her sex.
Sex For Promotions
Most importantly, in one news report, Rose Arenas claims that someone offered her a promotion in exchange for sex. Most promotions in the FD are based on your score on a test, and there's no way someone can promote you if you perform sexual favors for them. However, there are some logistical/administrative positions, within the FD, where someone could be promoted for whatever reason the supervisor has to promote that person (sex?). But, who would want to have sex with that chick anyway?
Assuming someone in the FD DID offer her a promotion in exchange for sex, WHAT'S THE PROBLEM!? I'm getting really tired of hearing this complaint. If you're offered a promotion in exchange for sex, and you don't like the terms of the offer, then say "NO." If you say "no," then you're in the exact same position I'm in as a male; you have to work for the promotion and prove you deserve it because of your job performance.
I wish someone would offer ME a promotion in exchange for sex. I'm going to file a sexual discrimination lawsuit because someone HAS NOT offered me a promotion in exchange for sex, while someone else WAS offered that shortcut.
A supervisor may have a lot of different reasons for promoting someone. For example, a supervisor may be impressed with somebody's work performance, her attitude, her ability to get along with people; or a supervisor may just enjoy being around one person more than he enjoys being around someone else (maybe he prefers the way one person looks or acts). Whatever the reason may be, a supervisor is going to promote a person who best serves his needs. If you want to be promoted, then find out what the supervisor needs, and fulfill those needs.
It's in a supervisor's best interest to promote the best person for the job. If you want the promotion, then be the best person, and you'll be more likely to get the promotion. If you don't want to take a job, in exchange for sex, then say "no," and then become the best person for the job. Regardless of whether or not you'll have sex with your supervisor, you'll be more likely to get the job if you're the best person for the job.
More often than not, in today's world, women are actually more likely to use their sex appeal as an asset to climb the corporate ladder, rather than complain that men perceive them as sex objects. So, stop complaining about sexist treatment, and join the women who have learned how to use men's sexual weakness to their professional advantage. If you don't want to use your sex appeal as an asset, then be the best person for the job. I wish I could 'short-skirt' my way to the top of an organization.
Now What Am I to Believe?...Some Women in HFD Actually Think the FD Treats Women Equally Imagine that, women who do their jobs and get along with other people somehow don't feel like the FD is sexist.

11 Snotty Remarks:
I have avoided commenting on these posts because to me they are quite inflammatory. However my blog is pretty inflammatory also hence people following it anonymously.
I would much rather be promoted because I was believed to have the same skills and competency as fellow workers. I suppose that's where women get pissed off, we are not just a piece of arse.
I would feel like I had achieved nothing if offered a promotion for a bit of slap in tickle in exchange. That is just prostitution.
I have found many female surgeons, female police officers, etc have to fight harder to get where they are and to fit in and be accepted by the dudes they become quite cynical and demeaning of other women not so driven as themselves.
I have been watching city council from time to time. This particular one was worth twice what I paid for it. A couple of people before the Sr. Capt. came on, was a man Dressed as Superman reading conspiracy theory letters from Ronald Regan. After hearing them each, I think superman had a more legitimate case.
Even more amusing (in a pathetic sort of way) was the reaction of our City Council members. They were tripping over themselves to admire her for having the courage to step foreword. Stating she could be risking her safety and even her life. By her own statement, she has been "stepping foreword" since she got off the tower. One council member stated she was angry because since the Station 54 issue she had spoken with numerous female employees and none of them felt they had been denied opportunity or harassed. She was angry because all those other women lied to her.
I believe Station 6 was glad to see her go. I believe people didn’t want her to come to their station or area of operation. I don’t believe any of it was because she was a female or Hispanic.
Apparently, the HFD is not the only COH entity with (let me think of an inflammatory adjective used by the media) widespread problems of racism and sexism. On a recent blog dated August 4, 2009, titled, Will City Controller Candidate Ronald Green Face Some Orchestrated Opposition Wednesday, authored by channel 26 news reporter Isiah Carey on his blog site, INSITE, an anonymous post was authorized alleging serious infighting among council members jockeying for future elections. Mr. Carey applies a strict policy of who he allows to post, it only gets posted after the author of the blog approves it. The post sounded as if it contained merit, maybe like someone on the inside, and the point of view appeared to be that of a black person, although there is no way to be sure because it was posted anonymously. The subject was who might get the backing of the gay caucus. Some of the information was straight to the point, naming individuals and all. Eventually, the inflammatory anonymous post was removed. It is not evident who required Mr. Carey to remove the anonymous post. There were several council members mentioned in the deleted post, one of which allegedly responded. For those that were not able to read the deleted post I will summarize. I will not include the names mentioned in the deleted post, however, anything in quotes was in the deleted post.
Allegedly, one of our elected officials has a serious drinking problem, and when this white female is inebriated, she may refer to another black male council member and his wife as “UPPITY NIGGERS”.
Allegedly, a white female council member seeking the support of the black community
“ is not a friend of black people”, “unless you are a step and fetch it”. Now this description of a person is new to me. I’m thinking it may have the same meaning as “House Negro”, which was used by council member Jones to describe the black HFD union leader.
Allegedly, none of the derogatory adjectives should be applied to a black male employee working for a white female council member because he has “issues” and needs a paycheck in the worst kind of way.
Allegedly, a white female council member has no problem replacing black employees, and she "Replaced them with white gays".
Allegedly, a black female city council member has a hard time working with others and has “other things to worry about”.
Responses to the author’s anonymous post revealed some things too.
Allegedly, if a white female city council member “cannot control you she will try and destroy you”.
Allegedly, a former black male politician was “ kicked off the DNC just for admitting he voted for Bush”.
Cont: An anonymous author questioned the legitimacy of some black leaders that are apparently backing a white female city council member, stating; “who do they lead”?
An anonymous responder claiming to be a member of the gay caucus says that she is an acquaintance of a white female city council member and a white female city controller and that both “display nothing other than the best desires for this city and the people that live here”, and “if you really want to know who is playing the BS card, just look around and ask”.
An anonymous responder talking about said council members and the whole situation states “we travel in dangerous territory when we make generalizations and lump all of anything in the same pile”. HELLO, I believe I have heard for a month or more, some council members lumping an entire city department into one pile.
Allegedly, a white female council member stated, “many outrageous lies concerning me have been posted here today anonymously”.
Another issue that has come to my attention, separate from the blog authored by Mr. Carey, is that allegedly, a black female city council member spoke at the rally against hate. After finishing her speech, she allegedly approached some friends swinging her arms like a boxer, stating to them that if she was going down, then she was going down swinging.
Now is it just me, or does anyone else feel uncomfortable with a city council making policy, creating ordinances and bringing in outside agencies to study other city departments, when they are purported to have widespread infighting, personal agendas, and racist and sexist attitudes. It seems to me that the conflict resolution idea brought up by the Mayor in a recent city council meeting, should first be applied to city council members, and if found to be successful, then applied to other City Of Houston departments. This would save taxpayers money because there are not as many council members, therefore it should not cost $190,000. In addition, the $60,000 sensitivity training could be given to city council members, yet saving the taxpayers even more money. Then council members could go to each City Of Houston department in their district to pass along the training they received. Another thought, most of us have witnessed in schools and elsewhere, the misapplication of zero tolerance. If the above-mentioned allegations are indeed true, council members should obviously be thankful that zero tolerance is not currently in effect. Isn’t it comforting to know that city council is working on behalf of all citizens.
Maybe we should shift our focus to racism and sexism in city council. Once their house is in order, then maybe they can worry about others. I have absolutely no confidence in city council making changes to any city department; decisions will not be enacted in the best interest of ALL members. Decisions will be enacted on behalf of special interests and agendas.
Anonymous, that's good stuff. I wish you would have provided names. It would make it more interesting. Whether what you say is true or not true, I really don't care; it's entertaining. Either way, there's probably at least some truth to it, which would indicate that they have problems of their own. It's ironic that we're relying on a dysfunctional group of self-promoting, alteriorly motivated, opportunist, racist, sexist, lying politicians to solve the problems in the FD (and the entire city). Jolanda Jones is likely the worst of this group of idiots, and she's the most boisterous.
I would love if this investigation somehow turned on them, and they became the subjects of a racist/sexist investigation.
Just visit INSITE, it's not hard to fill in the blanks. I'm not a computer geek and don't trust them (big brother-1984), I'm pretty sure though that I'm already on Obama's fishy list. It is ironic though that Jolunda can preach that she has a long list of names of women ff's that are afraid to come forward for fear of retribution, yet most of the responses to that particular subject were posted anonymously, probably for the same reason. I agree, maybe some truth to it. I believe that it was city council that made the same point, if enough people are talking about it, then there must be something there.
The fact is, I generally don't care if someone is thinking or acting in a racist or sexist manner. I just don't like the double standard. Therefore, if city council members or community activists are persecuting HFD for being racist & sexist, then I think it's appropriate to scrutinize everything they say or do in an attempt to reveal hypocrisies. You could conduct similar witch-hunts in every organization of the world and find reasons to believe people are acting in a racist or sexist manner.
Amen, I feel your pain. Enjoy these

Friendly "harassment" is actually a form of comaraderie. The more I get to know a person, the more I tease them. But the teasing has to be good-natured and funny, or it's just harassment.
